Assistant Gardener
A full-time Assistant Gardener is sought to join a small friendly team maintaining a family-owned private estate in the heart of Buckinghamshire. This is an excellent opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the development of the grounds and gardens as well as gaining hands-on experience.
The 110 acre estate comprises formal gardens with box topiary, stocked herbaceous borders and perennial beds, a walled garden, wildflower meadow, woodland and grazing fields. Vegetables and cut flowers are grown within the walled garden, alongside roses and fruit trees.
There are numerous small-scale future projects, such as woodland clearance and replanting, restocking of flower/shrub borders, and thinning of young tree plantations.
Duties include:
• Lawn mowing and lawn edging
• Border maintenance
• Pruning, clipping and weeding
• Greenhouse management
• Assisting with the care of the pet pigs
Estate work is varied, and some flexibility is needed, occasional ‘other’ duties may be required such as driving errands, assisting the house staff moving furniture, preparing for outdoor events etc.
Applicants are required to have:
• A full drivers licence
• Basic gardening skills, be physically fit, and comfortable working unsupervised at times
• DBS Check
The garden is equipped with a range of machinery hence basic knowledge would be preferred. Other power tools like chainsaws, strimmer, and ride-on mowers will require the applicant to demonstrate a familiarity with their operation. Applicants with a relevant horticultural qualification, ideally RHS level 2 and proven experience as a gardener within a team would be helpful.
Normal hours of work are Mon-Fri 8-4.30pm.
