Publisher and Scientific Editor

* Salary: £33,300 – £43,400

* Location: Cambridge UK, hybrid working

* Contract: Permanent

We are seeking an experienced and proactive Scientific Editor to drive the growth and development of a new series of open access STM journals.

We are Cambridge University Press & Assessment, a world-leading academic publisher and assessment organisation and a proud part of the University of Cambridge.

About the role

We are looking for an enthusiastic and driven Scientific Editor to launch and manage open access titles in a new series of STM academic journals: the Cambridge Prisms.

The Cambridge Prisms series of journals launched in 2023 as a new concept that will expand the traditional subject coverage of a given field by uniting wider-reaching concepts and publishing cross-cutting and interdisciplinary research with diversity and inclusion as a core focus. As Publisher and Scientific Editor, you will lead the editorial launch and subsequent development of four titles in the series, including brand new titles yet to be officially announced.

This is an excellent opportunity to take full responsibility for exciting new journal titles and shape their success from day one!

Key Responsibilities:

* In collaboration with senior editorial boards, refine the topic map for each title and plan invited content for launch that fulfils the interdisciplinary nature of the Cambridge Prisms.

* Lead the management and drive the acquisition of journal content, discussing individual manuscripts with editors and stepping in as handling editor where appropriate, identifying and managing delays on manuscripts, and enforcing procedures to resolve peer review issues if necessary.

* Identify opportunities to promote the journals under your management and ensure received submissions and published papers appropriately map the full scope of each journal.

* Create and implement journal development strategies in line with Cambridge Prisms philosophy, aims and targets.

* Establish and build excellent lines of communication with authors and standards of author service.

* Support, engage with and motivate editorial boards, leading quarterly meetings to discuss journal development strategies and maintaining regular contact with individual senior board members.

* Represent your journals and the Cambridge Prisms series at conferences and other relevant events.

Please see the attached job description for further responsibilities of the role.

About you

Are you a highly organised and motivated individual who is open to change in strategic focus and proactive in identifying new opportunities? You will have a strong STM academic background with a PhD in a relevant subject, or experience akin to this level of education, with a passion for open research and research integrity. This role requires direct involvement with the content the journals publish. You should be confident in proposing article topics and defining the scope of invited content, possibly having experience of overseeing peer review, and will be expected to work closely with marketing in crafting post-publication content-specific promotional messaging.

Ideally you will have experience in implementing strategies to meet content growth targets and other KPIs associated with academic journal success. It is desirable that you have experience in article-level or collection-level commissioning for open access titles. An understanding of open access publishing and the open research landscape is essential.

This position is wide-reaching and there will be additional learning opportunities and support to strengthen your academic publishing career path.

Editor and author engagement is a crucial aspect of the role. You will be proactive and confident in initiating and leading communications with senior editors, external editorial boards, as well as prospective authors.

Communication with the wider Cambridge Prisms development team is key in ensuring consistency and efficiency between all titles. You will have a collaborative and proactive mindset with awareness of the wider impact a journal-level decision can have on the series and wider CUP&A portfolio.

You will be experienced at working towards tight and strict deadlines and comfortable with working under pressure.

We are looking for someone who can demonstrate the following additional skills and knowledge:

* Strong organisational skills with an ability to prioritise personal workload

* Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines

* A supportive and collaborative approach to working

* Excellent written and verbal communication skills

We are a friendly and organised team with a passion for open access publishing and publication of high-impact interdisciplinary STM research.
