Essential criteria – caseload management/risk assessments of learners
The post holder will be responsible for providing a high quality effective mental health service to learners with emerging or complex mental health conditions to meet the Group’s Strategic and Operational objectives.
Main Purposes and Responsibilities
The main purpose of the Mental Health and Well Being Officer is to:
1. Leads on the development and delivery of the service to learners with emerging or complex mental health conditions who do not have an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
2. Leads on providing a safe and supported learning experience to learners with emerging or complex mental health conditions to initiate improvements in learner recruitment, retention, achievement and progression.
3. Assesses learners disclosing emerging or complex mental health issues at the Pre entry, enrolment or on programme stage and writes effective risk assessments where necessary to ensure the safety and wellbeing of this cohort.
4. Disseminates sensitive information in line with the General Data Protection Act and the Equality Act 2010 using the Groups agreed systems.
5. Provides mentoring support to an agreed caseload of learners with emerging or complex mental health conditions to enable them to study more effectively.
6. Provides workshops to learners with emerging or complex mental health conditions on for example; building resilience, building self-esteem, staying safe etc.
7. Acts as the nominated person for referrals from the Student services team or academic and support staff.
8. Works in partnership with other internal support services to provide an effective and coherent support offer to learners with emerging or complex mental health conditions.
9. Works in partnership with and develops links with local and national external agencies such as mental health trusts, social services and voluntary sector organizations to ensure the safety of learners with emerging or complex mental health conditions.
10. Undertakes an agreed schedule of supervision to adhere to safe working practice.
11. Raise awareness of mental health issues, by using a range of resources, activities and organising events to reduce stigma and to improve the emotional wellbeing of students and staff.
12. Delivers an agreed number of staff development sessions on teaching and supporting learners with emerging or complex mental health conditions.
13. Maintains accurate and timely records in accordance with the Group’s quality standards, learning support funding requirements, self-assessment, inspections, and skills audit in order to ensure a consistent high quality and cost effective service for learners.
14. Contributes to the self-assessment and quality improvement of mental health support at the Group in partnership with other internal support teams and external partners.
Person Specification
The following are deemed essential for the person appointed:
* A successful and proven track record of effectively assessing including risk assessing learners with emerging or complex mental health conditions
* A successful and proven track record in supporting and mentoring learners with emerging or complex mental health conditions to improve attendance and achieve their educational goals
* Identifiable personal achievements in the mental health field
* A successful and proven track record of running workshops to promote good mental health, resilience and staying safe for learners with emerging or complex mental health conditions
* A successful and proven track record in delivering staff development training on teaching and supporting learners with emerging or complex mental health conditions
* Experience working in partnership with multi-disciplinary teams
* Experience of evaluating own practice and to contribute to developing the service and quality systems
* Mental Health Nurse, Social Work degree or equivalent, Occupational Therapy degree or equivalent, Health and Social Care degree with specialisms in mental health and psychology.
* Ability to carry out and record assessments including risk assessments of learners with emerging or complex mental health conditions
* Good working knowledge of relevant legislation and its implications for the Service
* Good working knowledge of how to support and mentor learners with mental health conditions in an educational context
* Ability to keep accurate, detailed, timely records to meet funding requirements and good practice in the field
* A good understanding of the principles and benefits of supervision
* High level of computer literacy
* Able to work under pressure with a high level of accuracy and to strict deadlines
