Mechanical Design Engineer – Oxford
Our oil and gas industry client based in Oxford is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer.
Reporting to a Senior Engineer, the Mechanical Engineer will lead and assist with managing the current product portfolio in addition to assisting with new product developments. They will be expected to work to rapid product development timescales and with a high degree of technical independence.
The successful applicant will have strong communication skills, and the ability to work independently within a small team. Working alongside highly motivated and capable engineers, you will be expected to integrate well into this environment and contribute to a range of live projects.
The technical team have a rigorous internal technical review process, and the successful applicant will feel comfortable making technical presentations and writing reports to a high standard, working within a technical review environment alongside the rest of the engineering team.
Responsibilities
* Create product drawings in an appropriate CAD package, including a detailed understanding of tolerancing, dimensioning and stress analysis (finite element and hand calculation).
* Develop models and simulations (e.g. finite element analysis, Python, MATLAB) to solve technical problems, including post-processing of results, analysis and presentation.
* Developing and improving manufacturing and assembly processes for both new and existing products.
* Prototype assembly, verification testing and transfer to production.
Skills and Experience
The successful candidate will have:
* A degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering (First class, high 2:1, or equivalent).
* At least 1 year of experience as a Mechanical Design Engineer
* A can-do attitude and hands-on approach when needed to support wider team activities.
Candidates should have demonstrable expertise in some of:
* Mechanical component and/or pressure vessel design
* General Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to BS 8888
* Stress analysis of safety-critical components using hand calculations and finite element analysis.
* Working to industry design standards or similar internal processes.
* Writing technical reports for internal purposes and to support certification activity.
The applicant’s relevant expertise would draw on proficiency in a number of the following tools, listed in order of importance:
* CAD: Modelling and drafting for manufacture in Solidworks or similar.
* Finite element analysis: Abaqus, ANSYS, NASTRAN, Solidworks Simulation, (or equivalent package).
