We’re currently looking for a Woodland Creation Officer to join our team on a full-time, two year, fixed-term contract, working 37 hours per week. The post is part of a joint initiative with our neighbouring authority, Somerset West and Taunton.

You’ll be playing a key role in helping to conserve and enhance the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of our Park as well as taking positive action in the fight against climate change by delivering vital tree planting initiatives.

The Role
As a Woodland Creation Officer, you will promote, develop and implement woodland creation and tree planting initiatives at all scales throughout the National Park and parts of the adjoining district of Somerset West and Taunton. You will also focus on urban tree planting work and offer expertise to colleagues at both Exmoor National Park Authority and Somerset West and Taunton.
You will be working in line with both Exmoor National Park’s and Somerset West and Taunton’s Tree Strategies, Nature Recovery Visions and with policies around landscape resilience, climate emergency, flood management and economic and community development.
Specifically, you will:
– Act as the main contact for all woodland creation and tree planting activities
– Work in partnership with other landowning and land management organisations
– Cultivate connections with landowners and communities of interest
– Support the production and supply of local plant material through ENPA and SWT tree nurseries, working with staff and volunteers
About You
To join us as a Woodland Creation Officer, you will need:
– A HND and/or degree level qualification in an environmental discipline (e.g., forestry, landscape or countryside management, environmental science) or demonstrable equivalent level of knowledge gained through experience
– Experience within a forestry, conservation or environmental land management role
– Experience and knowledge of agri-environment schemes, particularly Countryside Stewardship, EWCO, Environmental Stewardship, how they operate and are administered
– Experience within previous roles of working with landowners and/or farmers on woodland creation and tree planting initiatives
– Experience of forestry, woodland creation, tree planting and nursery practice
– Knowledge of the context in which National Park Authorities operate including an understanding of landscape resilience, the role of trees in flood risk management, plant health, timber production, nature recovery and the issues currently facing rural areas and the farming community in particular
– Experience using a Geographical Information System (GIS)
– Proficiency using standard IT equipment and software including MS Office programmes and databases
– A full driving licence
