We are working exclusively in partnership with an industry leading business who deliver high value and complex turnkey engineering projects ranging from £2 million to £100 million in value.  The business focus on the delivery of turnkey engineering projects for a wide range of industries including Pharmaceutical, Food and Beverage, Distilleries, and breweries, delivering bespoke projects from concept design through to installation and commissioning at site.

The company employs over 300 staff worldwide boasting circa 100 engineers which over 20 are chartered. With this built-in foundation of expertise and experience allows the business to win numerous high-end projects and deliver them successfully.

The company have grown incredibly in the past six years from a turnover of £25 million to now being on the verge of becoming a £100 million.  The company has the backing of a large global organisation and a trading history and legacy dating back over 200 years.

As part of their growth, they are now looking to recruit a Mechanical Design Manager who will be responsible for leading and managing the design team who produce the 3D models for the process plants for projects as well as the detailed P&ID drawings needed for the projects.            

The Role

As a Mechanical Design Manager, you will be responsible for ensuring that the design team are on track with delivering 3D and 2D design work against project requirements, you will be leading a team which will include a Technical Manager and Lead, Senior, Design, Graduate and Apprentice engineer’s, implementing KPI’s, measures and performance plans to help with their development and success.

The role will involve:

Helping to identify and implement KPIs that can be used to measure the performance of the design team more effectively.
Allocation of tasks to the design team. Controlling the flow of design work to make sure design work starts on time and get designs right first time.
To attend department meetings with the other department managers to run through active projects, highlight any areas of concern to help prioritise workload.

Running weekly meetings with lead engineers to identify and issues with productivity from the weeks work.

Conducting 121s with their lead engineers and ensuring the lead engineers are progressing effectively with their teams 121s against annual appraisal objectives

Recruitment of permanent engineers and contractors based around workload.

Identifying gaps in productivity in the team and understand areas for improvement
The Candidate

To be successful in your application for this Mechanical Design Manager role you will need.

A Mechanical Engineering Qualification – HNC or above
Proven track record in management and implementing KPI’s and improvements
The ability to check 3D and 2D design work
To be strong organiser who works well to deadlines

To be strong team player who communicates well with others

Experience with P&ID projects beneficial but not essential
