Tomatoes, asparagus, tea bags, shaping processes, establishing best practice, really technically leading the dev function, working in a proper Agile environment, owning projects from inception to delivery, having real influence in the tech used and direction, the ability to affect real change and a small aubergine.
Sounds like one heck of a shopping list but they’re the staples on every Tech Lead’s shopping list … except maybe the Asparagus. Today is a supermarket sweep and they’re all on offer…
The team recently moved into a shiny new office fit for 120 people (they’re thinking big) and if all goes well they’re hoping they can fill up that space pretty-damn quick. They have 2 fully fledged product teams, including a separate front-end team but are looking for Tech leads with a solutions architecture mindset. This person will need to look at the products 3 dimensionally to understand how they affect the solution estate – for this, a broad tech awareness of Cloud technologies (Azure / AWS), DevOps, Security, etc is needed, beyond the scope what you would have as a normal senior dev.
Besides being high level developer in your own right in C#, MVC, .NET Core etc and the broad tech and solutions experiences mentioned above, you’ll need to be able to deal with internal/external stakeholders big and small. You’ll need to be able to win people over in settings of different degrees of formality. One minute you could be giving a pep talk to the tech teams or delivering a presentation to the board the next … you’ve got to be adaptable. The person coming into this position will be expected to take the ‘bull by the horns’ and need no hand-holding. Much of the initial assessment and discussions will be around existing, demonstrable, or proven experience in your career thus far …
As for the company culture, they’re a tight-knit, ambitious and customer focused business so it’s relaxed and friendly but are driven and protective of the culture they’ve created. They would forgo a ‘stable genius’ who is hard to work with for someone who really enjoys the job they do and has a positive impact on the team.
The MD is a techie himself and he explained that he has a lot of very good / great developers but now he wants someone who is substantially more experienced / raises the technical bar to come in, which in turn he knows will cause the whole team to come up to, and operate on, that level.
NB: The company was busy & growing substantially even before covid and due to the nature of the business it has been busier than ever, even more than at Christmas and there are no signs of slowing down for a long, long time – if ever!
Remote working: You will only be expected in the office on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The working hours will be just 35 hours per week with flexitime. It can be either of the following hours: 8am to 4pm OR 9am to 5pm OR 10am to 6pm.
There’s lots to talk about the company and role etc but if you like gist so far, shoot across your CV and I’ll be happy to run through things and answer all your questions.
