PHP Developer
Job Purpose:
To develop high quality, best practice software solutions, primarily using PHP within an agile development process. As part of the PHP development team you will provide a key role in developing our portfolio of PHP applications.
As a senior PHP Developer you will be trusted to work within the PHP team to design and develop software solutions which are innovative, perform at scale, and are well-tested. Our applications are used daily by a high volume of business users, so a strong focus on UX and UI will be important.
You will be encouraged to identify areas for improvement and suggest solutions to problems.
You should be willing to support and provide guidance to junior members of the development team.
Good written and verbal communication skills are essential for this job role, to work effectively as part of the team and with our clients.
Our tech stack:
PHP (5.5 & 7.1) on Apache on Linux (Docker and native)
PHPUnit and Selenium, with a Jenkins continuous integration server
HTML/JS/CSS
SQL, mostly Oracle SQL and PL/SQL (occasionally MySQL and PostgreSQL)
MVC web applications
REST/SOAP APIs
AWS
Git version control
Jira Software for sprint management and Confluence for documentation
About the PHP team:
The PHP development team is friendly and close-knit, and we would welcome a new member to join us. We run on Linux and/or Windows, and typically prefer to develop with PhpStorm, but devs are free to choose their own IDE. All developers enjoy high spec development computers, with 2 large screens as standard.
We run an agile development process with 2-week sprints. Daily team stand-up meetings, including client stakeholders via conference call. Backlog planning, retrospective, and kick-off meetings each sprint.
We work alongside the other development and support teams at Influential, and also cooperate with development and devops teams on the client-side.
Unit and integration testing are the norm, and all code changes are reviewed via pull requests or side-by-side. We help each other out, pair-programming to work through problems together when needed. New ideas for our applications are welcomed from all members of the team.
We are currently migrating our apps to better-use the AWS stack (starting with API Gateway for our REST APIs, and ECS/Elastic Beanstalk to improve our Docker setup). AWS knowledge would be advantageous, but not required.
We run an Oracle database, including stored-procedures in PL/SQL. Experience with Oracle is helpful, but definitely not required. If you have strong SQL skills from any other technology, then you will pick it up quickly.
Our major client is an international academic publisher, and we provide web applications backed by an Oracle data warehouse. Our applications support inventory management, product/customer/sale reporting, invoice and royalties management, and financial reporting.
Experience:
We are looking for an experienced software developer, preferably with 3+ years of commercial PHP development experience. If you feel that you'd fit our tech stack, have a drive to learn, and want to make your own mark on our applications and the team, then please apply.
