SUMMARY OF POST for the Catering Assistant
To assist in the provision and serving of food and beverages within the catering units, collect payment for such services, conduct cleaning and stock control duties.
SPECIFIC DUTIES OF POST for the Catering Assistant
– Effectively operate a cash register; to take payment, maintain a float and cash up the till in accordance with the College’s Cash Handling Guidelines and clients Financial Regulations
– Carry out basic food preparation, basic cooking and food assembly duties
– Serve food and beverages in line with service standards
– To be aware of and adhere to Catering department’s portion control guidelines
– Maintain a safe working environment in compliance and statutory Food Hygiene / Health & Safety policies
* To be aware of and adhere to fire procedures
* Store and restock foodstuffs in order to maintain an adequate service
* Clear, clean and polish crockery, cutlery, cooking utensils
* Clean and maintain floors and all equipment in kitchens, and service areas, in line with cleaning schedules
* To lay up and clear dining furniture and counters
* Transport catering items on trolleys in a controlled manner
* Provide a courteous and efficient service to all customers
* Maintain a high level of personal hygiene and ensure clean uniforms
* Check and pass on information and comments as required from contact with staff, students and visitors
* Within the scope of responsibility and knowledge of the post holder, to attempt to rectify any customer complaints by referring to the Supervisor on any action taken, or alerting him/her to action taken
* Work flexibly and undertake any other catering-related duties that may be reasonably required within the scope of the role
* Work at other locations, as required, depending on the Clients operational needs
CATERING ASSISTANT
Applicants are required to demonstrate that they possess the following attributes:-
1. Responsible attitude towards health and safety at work
2. A good understanding of the use of different equipment/machinery within the work area and the ability to operate such equipment/machinery
3. Physically able to operate different equipment/machinery and lift objects of varying loads
4. A good understanding of regularly used food ingredients
5. Good numerical skills sufficient to be able to deal with cash transactions effectively and accurately
6. Ability to operate a cash register following the successful completion of cashier training
7. A good command of verbal English proven by the attainment of a basic level English language course, in order to be able to understand basic instruction and communicate effectively with customers, including staff, students and visitors
8. A flexible approach to working, sufficient to be able to work a 5/7 days per week arrangement, work evenings and weekends, and able to work at any location/catering outlet, as reasonably requested
9. A high level of personal hygiene
