Do you have a passion for great content and quality journalism?

Do you have the ability to spot a trending story, to plan major news event coverage and to initiate and develop great campaign ideas?

Do you want to help lead a collaborative team of talented journalists who spearhead our news coverage in and around Sunderland?

Are you ready to step up to the challenge of leading the newsroom when the editor requires you to do so? And to help support staff on sister titles?

You will know how to find the best line in a reporter’s copy and present a story in the most impactful way online. Your understanding of the Editor’s Code and media law will be up to date and you will be used to working with, and learning from, digital analytics data.

You will have a desire to learn, develop and help embed change in an exciting and fast-paced team and will take responsibility for both the development of junior colleagues and the continued high performance of experienced specialists while sharing skills and insights with the wider newsroom.

Already living in a world of social media, you will have a grasp of SEO and a natural understanding of what makes great digital content – and you will always want to be first with the latest news for our titles in Sunderland and across the North East.

Responsibilities:

* Delivery of news agenda of breaking news, expert analysis and commentary for the Sunderland Echo and contributing to the running of sister titles the Shields Gazette and Hartlepool Mail.

* Assume editorial responsibility when required

* Help manage and motivate a team that is always on and responsive

* Staying analytically informed and target driven

* Ensuring team is creating highly engaging content in line with our brand content plans

Skills:

* An experienced journalist or editor with an NCTJ qualification or equivalent experience and an understanding of the IPSO code

* Able to understand and react to digital analytics

* Able to present information in an engaging way

* A keen eye for a story and an understanding of what drives audiences

* Ability to follow analytics, identify content trends and come up with original content ideas

* Understand how to drive engagement and audience through social media

* Be capable of managing the timely output of accurate copy

* Be capable of responding to live news in the most effective way

* A people person, able to work collaboratively with other managers and help direct reports understand newsroom goals
